We asked Natalie...
What motivates you to keep going when you face burnout?
My mission. This isn’t my first startup, but it’s the first that is entirely mission-driven which transformed my mindset as an entrepreneur. Sky Society’s commitment to helping women start meaningful marketing careers through experience, not education, is what keeps me going. It’s no longer whether or not I feel like working, but a matter of showing up for the people who put their trust in me.
What makes you most optimistic about the future of your industry?
Employers are more open-minded about what makes a good marketing candidate, good. We’re seeing a shift away from employers prioritizing candidates with the most expensive degree from the most exclusive university and a shift toward an emphasis on experience. This lowers the barrier to entry for people who didn’t have access or the means to receive higher education. It also gives aspiring marketers a new path to their dream career that doesn’t require accumulating tens of thousands of dollars of student loans.
What advice do you have for someone starting their career journey?
Focus on collecting experiences in not just your life, but your career. I thought I wanted to be a doctor until I interned at a medical clinic and realized I hated it. Then I thought I wanted to be a lawyer until I did a law internship and realized I hated it. The best way to figure out what you want to do is to first future out what you don’t want to do. Try new things and create before you consume.
